New York State Grape Wreath Applique Quilt 1870

This New York State antique applique quilt from the Mohawk River Valley dates from 1870. The unique pattern of grape vines employs taupe vines, tendrils, and calla lilies, punctuated by crimson grape clusters, hand appliquéd onto cream background. The hand quilting achives an extraordinary density of about 18-20 SPI. The border employs pieced triangles.

Pennsylvania applique quilt. An attached note from the original family says "Anna's, December 25, 1858". The applique pattern uses an oak leaf design. With hand stitching throughout, quilt density is 16 SPI. Excellent condition.

Rare 19th c. uncut framed child doll lithograph. Titled "Picaninny", the word is derived from the Spanish un nino pequeno, which means small child. Late 19th-early 20th C.

Patriotic Civil War-Era Jacquard Coverlet

America was on the verge of a civil war in 1861. Patriotism intensified for the majority of Americans as they experienced a young nation’s struggle for survival. Artisans made coverlets to order based on patterns the shop offered. This customer—probably from New York—specified a pattern containing a variety of symbols to convey patriotic zeal. Four domed buildings, four partridges, four pear branches and four stags offset the eight eagles. Two thistles anchor the symmetrical design at top and bottom.

Red and white double weave construction, the date 1861 appears in the corners. This fine antique coverlet was part of an exemplary collection by Joseph D. Shein, featured in his book Coverlets and the Spirit of America, curated by Melinda Zongor, pp. 202 and 203.

Bird of Paradise Antique Jacquard Coverlet

Exotic jacquard biederwand coverlet dated "1867". The ornate pattern of the birds, urns overflowing with flowers, and exuberant flag waving make this red, white, and blue coverlet a joy to behold.

According to coverlet expert, Melinda Zongor: tied -beiderwand is a single-thickness cloth made of cotton warp, and cotton and wool weft. Weavers of Dutch, Huguenot, and German descent and training used beiderwand structure.

This coverlet is featured in 'Coverlets and the Spirit of America' , a magnificent collection acquired by Joseph D.Shein and curated by authority, Melinda Zongor.

Needlepoint Sampler--c. 1815

Antique needlepoint cross stitch sampler in gold gilt frame. Circa 1815, this is an architectural design featuring a prominent school as its theme. Alphabet bands and spot motifs further charactrise the work of the young Jane Knowles. She shows the alphabet in rather random order, mixed with a number traditional symbols. The rich symbolism includes a dog (fidelity), dove (charity), falcon (nobility), lion (strength), swan (love, purity) and Eve picking an apple from a tree with seven apples (early symbolism for the seven deadly sins). She also includes various flowering plants, all having their unique meaning. The predominant thread color is dark forest green, gold/ochre and some beige. Silk on linen. Remarkable condition with no staining, discoloration, no visible wear to the linen base or silk stitching. Our conservator treated the piece with gentle vacuuming of the front and back, humidification, new backing board, batting and lining, new muslin behind sampler and re-mounting. Frame has a number of wear marks consistent with its age.
