This note depicts a tobacco leaf surrounded by crowns and fleur de lis printed with black ink on one side and a coat of arms, half face of a sun and row of crowns printed in red and black ink on the reverse.3 signatures included.

Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) was the next door neighbor and secret rival of Sir William Penn (1621 -1670) English Admiral to King Charles II and father of William Penn.

Samuel Pepys kept a diary from 1660-1670 recounting his daily life and eyewitness accounts of major historical events, including The Great Plague and Great Fire of London. Pepys provides revealing details of Sir William’s personal conduct as well as acid observations about his family. Pepys was an English Naval Administrator and member of Parliament. Having never been to sea and possessing fragile health, his animosity may well have been fueled due to jealousy over Sir William’s naval exploits.

This is a copy of the trial transcript of William Penn and William Mead in 1670 in London. Penn and Mead, both Quakers, were charged for unlawful assembly. The jury decided to acquit, but the judge sent them back, demanding a decision.

In 1861, Stanley Henkels was reading an old English country newspaper. He noticed a paragraph describing a rare Penn Charter to Pennsylvania in the possession of an old Quaker man who intended to send it to Pennsylvania for sale. Due to the Civil War, the man never completed the sale. Stanley Henkels pursued the matter. This book tells the story of Henkels’ adventure and how he tracked down this important document. The book also contains a copy of Penn’s original Charter of Liberties for Pennsylvania. This famous charter grants to the province the right to choose a Governor and a Provincial Council or Legislature—the same form of government in place today. 23 pages.
