Mmmmm, as I sit down to write about Young’s Studio & Gallery, a nice sense of peace descends. Located in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains in the town of Jay, New York, the studio is a peaceful respite in a constantly busy world. Contemporary artists Sue and Terrance Young have created a place where they can practice their crafts in the natural beauty that surrounds them.
Sue Young began her pottery career in 1982. She is thoughtful and observant, calm and serene and her work reflects her personality. Her credentials include a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Potsdam and her technical ability is evident. She and artist husband Terrance have participated in numerous shows and his art can be found in public spaces throughout the region.
I discovered Young’s Studio & Gallery many years ago when Charlie and I began staying in the Adirondacks once we became empty nesters. Young’s Gallery is located easily accessible from a beautiful connector highway between Upper Jay and Jay, New York. We pulled in and I have been hooked ever since. My first purchase was a sage green domed cover cheese plate. The handle of the dome cover is a skillfully hand made and painted sitting cow. Such whimsy, I thought, and I have been returning ever since to see what Sue may have conjured next. I’ve purchased mugs, a pour over coffee cone - which I use every day, bowls, casseroles, teapot, cookie jars, all predominately sage green, a few a lovely wheat color. This past visit, Sue placed on her shelf a pottery guitar player. She showed me the paper pattern she devised to create her vision. I would have bought that, too, but left it so she could make more figures.
Sue Young has devoted followers besides myself. I almost feel in competition to purchase something before the others arrive. Below is a small sample of her work. The website is youngsgallery.com It is best to visit the studio to experience the tranquility and beauty of her recent work. Besides pottery, Sue has introduced colorful yarns and jewelry.
