One of my absolute favorite annual events is the Goschenhoppen Folk Festival in Perkiomenville, PA. The festival is sponsored by the Goschenhoppen Historians, a group that preserves and celebrates 18th century German settler’s way of life. The authentic Pennsylvania Dutch traditions are demonstrated by devoted volunteers of all ages who study throughout the year and then present their findings to the public in traditional outfits with original equipment. The early work involved to persevere and survive in this region as it was colonized is mind boggling to me. And that is why, year after year, I return to remind myself what a privilege it is to live in modern times with so many conveniences. I used my cell phone to capture images of the event. This year, as a special treat for me, our granddaughters came with us and they were able to see for the first time how their ancestors lived. Our 9 year old was intrigued by the wood cutting. The 2 year old enjoyed the Henry Antes House. I encourage you to “get to know what good is” by visiting next August at 318 Colonial Rd Perkiomenville, PA
When I was young and growing up in Lower Pottsgrove, I never dreamed I would be bringing my husband and grandchildren here, to walk along the road I knew so well and showing them the traditions of our ancestors.
